Frederick and Jessie Hannant Riches (31 May 1889 - 16 January 1980) married on 19 December 1912 in the Parish of St Alban, Dartford, in the County of Kent. Frederick and Jessie were keen for a new life in Australia, so Frederick left England ahead of Jessie, as he needed to look for work. In fact Frederick sailed just two weeks before WW1 broke out in 1914. Frederick got work with the Tramways soon after arriving in Melbourne.

Frederick and Jessie Wallis had 2 daughters:
Marjorie Hannant Wallis (born 18 November 1918 in Cawkwell Street, Malvern and died 12 July 2017 in Baxter, Victoria - Cremated at Springvale Crematorium).
Joan Freda Wallis (born 12 November 1927).

Marjorie went to Hartwell State School from 1925-1930. She and her friend Thelma Searle were the first girls to go from Hartwell State School to Box Hill Technical Girls School. After leaving school at 14, Marjorie worked at O.Gilpin Ltd in their Head Office & Truck Yard in Belson Street, East Malvern in Lay-bys and gratuities section from 1933 - 1939.  When Marjorie joined the company there were about 130 drapery stores in the Gilpin chain and she knew every store by name.  The Gilpin chain of stores were bought by G.J.Coles in 1951. Once she married she could no longer work at Gilpins as they did not employ married women.

Meanwhile, Frederick Wallis' brother William J. Wallis had come to Australia and opened a Butcher's shop in Tooronga Road, Malvern, and later in 407 Wattletree Road, East Malvern. Frederick Wallis worked with his brother as a Butcher.  Fred and Jessie Wallis lived nearby in Elizabeth Street, Malvern.
Sands & McDougall records: William J.Wallis, Butcher, at Lower Malvern Road, Caulfield East in 1918 and W.J.Wallis & Son, Butcher, at 407 Wattletree Road, East Malvern from 1934 to 1941.

Frederick and Jessie Wallis leased a Butcher's shop at 209 Toorak Road, Camberwell (1930-1934). Opposite Arthur and Doris Olney had a Fruiterer's shop at 224 Toorak Road, Camberwell (1933-1936). Both families lived above their shops and so started a friendship between Keith Olney and Marjorie Wallis who soon became sweethearts. Keith drove a delivery van for K.L.Ballantynes Dairy Produce in the city and often he would just happen to be in the East Malvern area around lunch time so they could eat lunch together. Frederick drove a Cleveland with a "Dickie seat" at the back where the 2 girls rode in.

1934 The Wallis' Butcher business failed due to the depression, so the family shifted to a rental house in Ray Ave, Edithvale for about 6 months, but they were affected with the big flood in the Edithvale area, then shifted to 15 Keith Avenue, Edithvale. Fred worked at a Garage. He also kept chocks that he sold as dressed chocks.

1938 the Wallis' rented a house at 252 Point Nepean Road, Edithvale and lived there until 1940. Point Nepean Road became Station Street in 1940.  Frederick had an old Ford when Joan was a baby. The family had two cockerspaniels at Edithvale.

Sands & McDougall records: Fred & Jessie Wallis lived at 209 Toorak Road, Hartwell 1930-1934, at 15 Keith Ave, Edithvale in 1936, and at 252 Point Nepean Road/Station St, Edithvale in 1937-1940.
